Code of conduct for VCC players
1. Introduction
It is expected that each VCC member will accept the responsibility that comes with being part of the Club and conduct themselves in line with the values that underpin the game of cricket. This responsibility is made explicit in the Club’s Code of Conduct (hereafter CoC) and VCC members are bound to adhere to these.
2. On-field behaviour
2.1 Umpiring decisions
VCC players are required to respect the decision of the umpire at all times and without exception. In cases where a VCC player fails to do this, the Captain of the team shall immediately intervene to curtail such behaviour. Repeated failure to respect umpiring decisions by a VCC member will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings (see point 5).
2.2 Interaction with opposition
VCC members are expected to behave towards opponents with respect at all times. Any communication with opponent players during play (on the field and off it) must be cordial and in line with the laws and spirit of the game. Any VCC member engaging in disrespectful, aggressive or unsporting behaviour towards an opponent during play shall be subject to his/her Captain’s sanction, as the Captain sees fit. Repeated behaviour of this kind will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings (see point 5).
3. Internal club matters
3.1 Selection policy
3.1.1. Selection criteria of VCC members for club teams on match days are laid out prior to the start of every season by the VCC Committee (hereafter ‘the Committee’) and communicated to all members via email and on the club Facebook page. All VCC members must respect the selection criteria.
3.1.2. Where a VCC member wishes to express an opinion on team selection, he/she should in the first instance address this opinion directly to the relevant team Captain, who will seek to clarify the member’s query. In instances where the VCC member considers the Captain’s explanation to be unsatisfactory, he/she can submit a written request for clarification to the Committee, who will deal with it as quickly as is practicable. The Committee’s decision on the issue raised by the request will be final.
3.1.3. Club members must not express their views on team selection on the Club’s social media platforms (VCC Facebook page, WhatsApp). Any breach of this will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings (see point 5).
3.2 Use of club social media
Members are expected to use the VCC Facebook page and Whatsapp group as a vehicle primarily for exchanging information related to VCC and cricket related issues. Members should refrain from issuing messages or posts that could be construed as being offensive, insulting or obscene. Any member doing so will be contacted by the Club’s Social Secretary (responsible for social media) and advised on future behaviour. Repeated breaches will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings (see point 4).
4. Other
4.1 Match-day duties
All VCC members are required to make themselves available to assist in the preparation and closure of the ground on a home match day. Whenever necessary, VCC members are required to carry out umpiring duties and scoring as needed. In the case where there may be uncertainty over allocation of tasks or responsibilities, this will be resolved by the team Captain for that match day.
4.2 Payments (membership, match fees)
4.2.1. The Club annual membership fee will be decided by the Committee prior to the start of the season and communicated to all current members via email and Facebook. Any individual wishing to become a VCC member is obliged to pay his/her annual Club membership fee prior to the start of a season, or as soon as is practicably possible to do so afterwards. Any individual failing to play the club annual membership fee will not be entitled to participate in any VCC-related activities.
4.2.2. Match-day fees and paying arrangements will be decided by the Committee to the start of the season and communicated to all current members via email and Facebook. Any changes to match-day fees for specific games will be communicated to members prior to the game by the VCC committee or match-day captain. All members are obliged to pay matchday fees as per specific rules set by the Club.
4.3 Clothing
Unless explicitly approved otherwise by the team Captain in question, all VCC members are required to wear full cricketing whites when playing for the club, including an up-to-date VCC shirt.
4.4 Timekeeping
All VCC members selected to play for a VCC team should adhere to timelines for games set by the team Captains, in particular meet-up times prior to a game. Should a VCC player experience difficulties in meeting a set deadline, he/she should immediately inform the game-day Captain. Any VCC member that repeatedly fails to respect such deadlines will be subject to internal disciplinary proceedings (see point 4).
5. Disciplinary & dispute resolution process
5.1 Team Captains
Any issues relating to on-field behaviour or team selection will be dealt with in the first instance by the relevant team Captains. VCC members are required to respect the decisions of the Captain in all relevant matters.
5.2 VCC Committee
Any issues that the team Captains cannot resolve directly will be addressed by the Committee. The Committee will address any such issues (i.e. breaches of code of conduct, disputes over issues of team selection) as quickly as is practicable. The decision of the Committee is final.
